About Ledgental

Ledgental makes free tools, guides, and client links for bookkeepers and small bookkeeping firms in the United States. It is built by an independent software company, not by an accounting firm, and the app is free while it is in beta.

Who makes it

Ledgental started in 2026 as a software project: a developer who builds SaaS products, writing tools for the proposals, letters and month-end checks bookkeepers otherwise build by hand. We are software people, not bookkeepers or CPAs, and the site is written so that it never has to rest on our say-so.

Every rule and rate on this site links to where it comes from: the IRS, the SSA, a state revenue department, the statute, or the publisher. Each page says when its figures were last checked. Where a page gives our own reading of a rule or a starting assumption, it says so in the same sentence.

The businesses and people in the running examples are fictional, for example Northline Bookkeeping and its bookkeeper Jordan Miles, Maria Lopez of Lopez Cleaning Co, Harbor Coffee Co, Maple Street Dental, and Maple & Pine Home Goods. They exist so the tools, the guides, and the screenshots all show the same numbers, and so no real client's details appear anywhere on the site.

How the tools and guides are made

  1. Every rule is read at its source

A rate, threshold, or filing rule goes on a page only after we read it at the IRS, the SSA, a state revenue department, or the statute. We record the wording, the link, and the date, and the page shows that source next to the figure. The “How we built this page” box at the end of each page lists what the numbers rest on and what the page doesn’t cover.

  2. The arithmetic is done by code we test

Each calculator’s engine has known-answer tests: inputs with results worked out by hand, run before every release. The worked examples in the guides are recomputed from the same engine, so a figure in the text matches the one the tool shows.

  3. We draft with AI tools and review before publishing

Research and first drafts use AI tools, the way a writer uses a search engine and a spell checker. A person reviews every page before it goes live, every figure goes through the source check above, and nothing is published at scale. Where we aren’t sure, the page says so (“our reading of the rule”, “our starting assumption”) instead of sounding certain.

  4. Corrections are welcome and visible

Each tool has a feedback box, and [email protected] reaches the people who build the site. When a reader finds an error, we fix it, update the page’s date, and note the change in its “What changed” line.

What we make

  • The app (free beta)

Send clients one link to accept a proposal, sign an engagement letter, answer transaction questions, or upload documents, from their phone and without an account.

  • Free tools

Templates and calculators that run in your browser, each with a guide that shows its figures, sources, and limits. Nothing you type leaves your computer.

What we don't do

  • No ads, no affiliate links, and no paid placements. We don’t take money from software vendors or anyone else for a mention.
  • No tracking of what you type. The tools run in your browser; firm details you choose to save stay on your device. Only the feedback box, the contact form and the app’s “Send” buttons send anything, and only when you click them. The feedback box and the contact form go to our inbox through Formspree.
  • No tax or legal advice. The guides explain federal rules and show where to check; your client’s return is between them and their tax preparer. Ledgental is not affiliated with the IRS or any state agency.
  • No invented reviews, ratings, or user counts. If a number isn’t on this site with a source, we don’t use it.

Found an error, or want a tool that doesn't exist yet? Email [email protected] or use the feedback box at the end of any tool. Our own text, charts and tables are free to reuse under CC BY 4.0 with credit to Ledgental and a link. Quotes from the IRS and other federal agencies are public domain; quotes from state agencies and other publishers stay theirs, and the site's code and app screenshots aren't covered by the license.
